James Barr made a recording of Cloud Dance. This is an impressionistic piece for solo guitar. The lead sheet can also be played by other instruments and small groups. It can be heard on the Cloud Dance page.
I want to give a thank you to Rich Pulin. When we met through the Jazz Arranging group on Facebook in 2015 I was not familiar with him. However, I quickly realized that Rich is a world-class composer-arranger/trombonist. He has worked with many of my jazz heroes. Here is a link to his biography at All About Jazz.
Happily, Rich took an interest in my music and invited me to be on his Pulin 4 Jazz radio show. It became clear that he runs with the big dogs when I shared the show with Bill Crow (whom I have admired for many years). I had a great time on Rich's show and we decided to make it a monthly program. I feel a deep gratitude to Rich for how he connects with my music and brings it to his international audience. According to Rich, his show has listeners in 196 countries. In addition to the various music projects that keep Rich busy, he is devoted to The Early Childhood Music Education Foundation. Please visit its website and, if you are so moved, give it your support. David Arivett made a recording of A Ballad For T. This piece is a dedication to Thelonious Monk. David's playing on solo piano is deeply expressive. It can be heard on the A Ballad For T page.
The music ensembles at Sandy Spring Friends School will present a concert on January 14 at 7:15 PM. It will be held in the school's Performing Arts Center, The address is 16923 Norwood Rd, Sandy Spring, MD 2860. The jazz ensemble will perform three of my pieces.
After adding several new pieces to my website, I now have 46 originals featured as a representation of my work on the Selected Originals page.
David Arivett made a recording of Fanfare. It beautifully captures the spirit of this piece. It can be heard on the Fanfare page. The ensemble sound is different from his other recordings for me. It has a trumpet section added to a mid-size ensemble with soprano sax, alto sax, trombone, tuba, and rhythm section (with Brazilian percussion).
I finished an arrangement of Fanfare for 5 wind instruments and rhythm section. Flexible instrumentation is used to enable the music to be played by many configurations of instruments. The Fanfare page on my website has a link to the ensemble score. Bands that are interested in playing this piece can write to me from the Contact page.
All of the handwritten lead sheets and scores displayed on my site have been converted to Sibelius.
My handwritten score for Smaller Ups And Downs has been put into Sibelius and revised. The Smaller Ups And Downs page on my website has a link to the score at the New Music USA Library.
This piece is for 5 wind instruments (flexible instrumentation) and soloist. The role of the soloist is entirely improvised. In addition, the soloist does not have to be limited to one musician. It can be expanded to multiple musicians -- up to a small band (any genre). Any creative possibility can be explored. Ensembles that are interested in playing this piece can write to me from the Contact page. George Spicka and other music friends are performing a concert this Sunday at An Die Musik, 409 North Charles, in Baltimore at 1 PM. It's free! The flyer has details. George and his band are going to work their magic on my New Tango No. 6.
