New Tango No. 6: Coalesce
New Tango No. 6 is part of a series of tango-jazz compositions. Each one explores a particular quality of the tango. Number 6 is about dancers becoming attuned to one another. Recorded by George Spicka, piano. Note: The recording is an edited version of a longer live performance.
Unlike my other tangos, New Tango No. 6 is entirely in free-time. The melody has a haunting mood as it floats over the background with a fluid movement. This piece expresses an open approach to my music. Anything can be tried with it. Using free-time in this way, the melody player(s) and the background players need to be in visual communication with one another on when to make the harmonic changes. In effect, the process of performing this piece is an expression of its title.
